Glenmuckloch to Redshaw Reinforcement Project
Consultation on preferred route for new overhead line

The last day for submitting feedback is March 28, 2024

SP Energy Networks owns and manages the electricity transmission system across central and southern Scotland. We are part of the ScottishPower Group. The Scottish Government has set a target of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 – meaning that Scotland’s contribution to climate change would end, definitively, in one generation.

For Scotland and the UK to meet their targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to Net Zero, we need to increase network capacity so we can transport more green energy to our homes, schools and businesses, where it is needed.

The existing electricity transmission network in the south of Scotland will soon be at full capacity, unable to accommodate all the clean, green renewable energy we will all need in future. Around 2GW (gigawatts) of new renewable energy is expected to connect to the transmission network in the area around Glenmuckloch and Glenglass in the future.

To enable this, we need to build a new 400,000-volt (400kV) overhead line between Glenmuckloch and the proposed new Redshaw substation at Red Moss, close to the M74 motorway.

This is our first round of public consultation. Your views will help us develop more detailed plans, and we will hold a second round of consultation on our detailed proposals before we apply to the Scottish Government for consent to build the proposed overhead line.

We would also like your views on our plans to reroute and remove a section of the existing 400kV overhead line at Redshaw, so we can connect the proposed new substation to the transmission network. This will be subject to a separate consent application.

What we are consulting on

This is our first public consultation on the project. In this consultation, we’d like to know:

  • Your views on the preferred route
  • If you have comments about any of the alternative routes
  • If you have any comments about the rerouteing and removal of a section of existing 400kV overhead lines
  • Any other factors you would like us to consider. We would particularly like to hear your views on your local area e.g. areas you use for recreation, local environmental features you would like us to consider, and any plans you may have to build anything along the route.

We will publish a report of the first round of public consultation early next year and give you another chance to comment on the detailed proposal as the project develops.

Q1. Rerouteing and removal of a section of existing 400kV overhead lines near to the proposed Redshaw substation

We would like your views on our plans to reroute and remove a section of the existing 400kV overhead line at Redshaw, so we can connect the proposed new substation to the transmission network. This will be subject to a separate consent application.

Q2. Proposed new overhead line between Glenmuckloch and the proposed new Redshaw substation

We are proposing to build a new 400kV overhead line between proposed new substations at Glenmuckloch and Redshaw, near Red Moss.

The new overhead line will be carried on steel towers (pylons) with a standard height of 46 metres. Each tower will have three arms on each side, and each arm will carry a set of conductors (wires). This is because there will be a circuit on each side of the towers, and each circuit has three sets of wires.

Do you have any comments on our preferred route for the overhead line or the alternatives we considered? Please let us know which section(s) of the route you are commenting on, or if your comments apply to the whole route.
